The Alpher-Bethe-Gamow Paper

Who says scientists don’t have a sense of humor? In 1948, physics PhD student Ralph Alpher and his advisor George Gamow were finishing a manuscript about their work on how certain elements originated after the Big Bang. Gamow decided that it would be pretty clever to submit the paper with another author added.

So he contacted Hans Bethe, a German-American physicist who had been an instrumental member on the Manhattan Project, collaborated with Oppenheimer and Feynman, and would later win a Nobel Prize in physics. Although he did not do any actual research with Alpher and Gamow, his Nobel Prize was later awarded for similar work.

So in 1948, Alpher, Bethe and Gamow published their tongue-in-cheek paper, authors listed alphabetically of course.

Dutch design firm CLEVER˚FRANKE puts together a weather visualization annually. This year, they looked at how people’s feelings about the weather on social networks compared to the weather itself.

The result is this amazingly intricate weather wheel (full PDF report here, with more data). Dutch people are mostly negative about their weather, and sunshine correlates with positive feelings, unsurprisingly.
